It is important to find a GP who is not just interested in treating you when you are sick; they should be active in making sure that you live a lifestyle that allows for good health. They should give you information of what you should be doing to stay healthier for longer – what foods you should be eating and how much, how much alcohol you can safely consume, how much exercise you should get each week and so on.
Your doctor should also help you stay healthy by performing checks on a regular basis. You want to check on things like blood pressure, blood cholesterol, blood sugar and even things like memory. If they are not able to perform tests because they don’t have the right equipment they should be able to send you to a nearby hospital where you can get them done.
GP’s who work in conjunction with other doctors who specialize in different areas of medicine are always a better way to go. It would be nice, for instance, if your doctor, your dentist and optometrist were all in the same medical practice – it saves you the trouble of having to move from location to location to get treated because you can go in and have everything done at once.
Make sure that all the doctors that treat you are properly qualified and have attended good universities – the last thing you want is to be treated by a quack. They should also receive continuing education in order to stay relevant. Any medical professional who is overly salesy is not good for you.
